These are so poignant. More so, I think because I know a little of the backstory. Look forward to seeing more. And you know, I think the finished piece would make a great exhibition.

Thanks so much, June, that means a lot, especially as you remember his story. Thank you.

I want to know so much more. Yet, absent that, your pain, love, confusion, yearning, connection, and healing process are strong and present. This is the human stuff, the good stuff. Thank you for sharing this project, this journey.

Thanks, BB, I really appreciate your comments. It’s a very human story and something we all share in at some time in our lives.

I will be interested in seeing how this project develops. Are there any thoughts about indicating what each picture represents?

Absolutely, the full series has a statement of intent that explains the images. I was also considering accompanying the photos with short explanations. It’s a balance of saying too much and not enough! Thanks for your words.

I think it is an excellent start and frames what is to come very well. No doubt this endeavor will be as much about you processing your loss as a lasting tribute to him. Best wishes for discovery, healing and happiness.

That’s absolutely my hope. It’s about sustaining life and memory, reconnecting with someone who really should’ve had a better end to his life. Thanks for your words.

This is going to be a wonderful project. Take your time with it. Don’t rush to get create a final “product”. Many ideas often come to me during the process of making a zine/book. I already love what I am seeing and I can’t wait to see more. Share or don’t. Do what feels right.

What a traumatic experience to lose your brother at such a young age.

Thanks Susanne. That’s it isn’t it, that compulsion to rush to complete work, I feel this will be a slow process.

Oh, sigh, how this makes my heart ache for you and your brother. It’s a wonderful project and I look forward to seeing it develop. What you’ve shared about your brother so far (in other posts) makes this project particularly poignant. How wonderful that you kept his letters to you. I had letters from my sister who died a couple of years ago, letters that spanned 30 years. I’m grateful that I kept those letters and was able to share them with her sons and husband. These things—the letters, your project, our writing about them—keep them alive.

I agree. They keep memories alive and also change in meaning as we get older too. I see new meaning in his words now I’m an adult that I didn’t see when I was 21.

I’m so glad you have those letters - so meaningful and personal.

Thank you for sharing, Nat. You can really feel the emotions, it’s beautiful so far.

I just finished reading Sally Mann’s Hold Still. She often incorporates her family into her projects including some later works created after going through an attic full of boxes of her parents’ memories. It was pretty eye opening for me to learn about one of the great photographers who forged her own path and style.

I think this is a fantastic project, and it will touch a whole lot of people. That's how I react to it. That's why I saved it until I could catch and read it, which I've finally done today.
